I'm a post now instead of a pre (surgery that is)

Had my surgery Tuesday, March 8th and got home Wednesday evening.  Dr. Blackstone said everything went great. No drain, naseau, or anything.  I've had very little pain.  I made the mistake of letting the pain get on top of me at the hospital because I didn't like the liquid lorotab.  So, instead of asking them to order a tablet and pill spit it in half, I just went back to bed. This was a mistake that I paid dearly for.  That much pain cut into my walking and sipping time (very important).  It's really hard to get that much water in when you have to take small sips and take time in between sips. After I got control of the pain, the SPA lady showed up and gave me a great facial and massage. That made everything all better.

I'm feeling good today, just one and a half days post surgery. Of course still doing clear liquids.  I think it may get a little more difficult when I have to start making food choices next week.  Good luck to you all.  So far, really, easy time.

Congrats and welcome to the losers bench.  I had Dr. Blackstone also and she did a wonderful job.  I had very little pain in the hospital or at home.  I think the gas was what I suffered with the most!  By next week you will be so sick of broth and jello that you won't have any problem making a food choice.  Besides, your choices are so limited it won't be that much of a decision to make.

Good luck on your journey.

Hi Kellykelly:

So - how are you doing?  How much have you lost since your surgery?   Do you have a better variety of choices now to eat?  What was the post-op seminar like? What meal did they give you? LOL, I'm just full of questions.

I'm doing pretty good. I'm still having trouble with food getting stuck a LOT but I'm working through it.  You have to make sure the food is moist or you will pay for it!!  I have lost 46 pounds since surgery. I hit a 17 day stall around week 3 but it's been moving along ever since.  The food choices for me kind of suck because I am a pretty picky eater.  They will first put you on proteins only whi*****ludes chicken, turkey, fish, seafood, cottage cheese, any cheese, yogurt, tofu, eggs and beans of any kinds except baked.  I hate seafood of any kind so it kind of limits my choices.  At the post op seminar they will let you pick a couple things to eat.  When I went they gave us the choice of a hard boiled egg, refried beans, tofu and I think cottage cheese.  It's a really small amount but you will be grateful for any kind of food at that point!

At my one month class they opened up our food choices to include fruits and vegetables (cooked only).  They will still want you to focus on protein first and will tell you that you won't need to continue the shakes at that time.  I still use the shakes sometimes because I can't get enough protein other ways.  Chicken gets old no matter how many ways you cook it!

I guess at 4 months they will open up the food choices some more.  Hopefully it will include milk and some other stuff like whole wheat foods.

I had RNY.  Any questions you have please feel free to ask.  I'm no expert but I'm a couple months ahead of you and can give you a heads up on what's to come.  Good luck.

Thanks Kelly - this is really helpful. I'm really having some regrets but I think this is normal and will change later.  Right now, I am getting no protein  because I cannot stomach the Isopure, the jello doesn't taste good to me nor does the herbal tea. The only think I really enjoy is the broth and the water. I force some jello and tea down but I cannot force the Isopure down. I called the dieticians this morning but thy haven't called me back yet.  I do look forward to Tuesday when they will let me eat an egg or some beans. It's so weird. It isn't because I'm hungry, I just really miss the taste and the texture of it. I had no idea this would be the case. I just thought, I won't be hungry so I won't miss food.  Man, was that a misconception. I too am a picky eater and not crazy about seafood. I'm hoping that my hubby can figure a way to cook the seafood where I will learn to like it. We'll see. I do know that in the past, if I didn't like something, I could shower it with a sauce of any kind and eat it (i.e., fish needs catsup). Does this help you?

I am really having trouble with my stomach churning and burning right now. Did you get this? What is it?

I find that the warm liquids often settle best with me too.  I never tried the Isopure so can't help you there.  I found the EAS protein shakes to be pretty good but everyone's tastes are different.  Also the Chike was delicious but kind of expensive. You can find that online.

I still have some problems with the "head hunger".  I still never feel hungry so remembering to eat has been my problem.  I know what you mean by the taste of food though, I was really grateful for that egg and beans!  Funny thing is you probably won't even enjoy it but it beats the broth.

Sauces and things definitely help.  You just have to use no sugar stuff. I use salsa on a lot of things and that helps too. Also you might try the greek yogurt like a sour cream substitute.  It's pretty good that way.

I didn't have the churning and burning so I'm not sure.  It could just be your actual stomach being angry because it doesn't have anything to do anymore.  Definitely ask the office when they call you back.

Thanks for your help again.  Well - I had the sleeve and that's probably the difference in the churning thing.  I will ask them IF they ever call me back.  I sure do look forward to having some real food and losing some weight.
